A woman previously residing at a female recovery facility in California reportedly stole a minivan and engaged in a hours-long law enforcement pursuit culminating with her traveling across the border into Mexico on Monday.

Auto Theft Reported from Recovery Residence

As stated in a law enforcement statement, a another female, the owner of the vehicle, forty-five years old, reported that her 2004 gray Toyota Sienna was missing, along with her vehicle key. The owner, who manages two female recovery residences, identified the suspect as Alyssa Wilson at a recovery facility in Thousand Oaks, situated approximately an hour’s drive of Los Angeles.

“My keys were taken from my manager’s handbag. I arrived right when it was occurring,” Walters stated, noting that the minivan is designated for the sobriety home’s tasks.

Dramatic Chase Develops Across Multiple Counties

Authorities located the van about 12 miles to the north in Simi Valley, where they tried to initiate a traffic stop, but Wilson did not comply and sped away. She reached speeds of about 90mph on the State Route 118 until the pursuit continued into Los Angeles county. At that point, local sheriff’s deputies transferred the pursuit to the CHP once the driver merged onto the Interstate 405 traveling southbound.

“This incident is very unique in the context of the traffic conditions allowing drivers to persist on the freeway and extend this pursuit,” commented a spokesperson from the local law enforcement agency.

The suspect allegedly avoided all the spike strips deployed on the road by police, as seen in footage from above.

International Getaway and Aftermath Developments

The pursuit eventually reached the US-Mexico border by early afternoon, prompting the highway patrol to end its pursuit due to jurisdictional constraints.

The vehicle owner stated on the following day that the minivan was located in Tijuana, Mexico and that she was working with the CHP to retrieve it.

“At the end of the day, I’m not concerned with the vehicle,” she remarked. “I’m relieved knowing she wasn’t hurt. The minivan is easily substituted.”

The sober living home owner, who has operated the recovery residence since last October, acknowledges that the path to recovery from addiction and emotional distress is not always linear.

“This represents a mental health and substance abuse crisis,” Walters emphasized. “We need more support. It is essential to provide more resources for those that are facing challenges.”

“The recovery process can be messy,” she added.
